I'm employed: Chapter Two
Today I had my first day at work since July and my first day in a professional kitchen in almost exactly a year. I was pretty nervous. Even though I have been baking and cooking privately, I’ve been out of the kitchen, so to speak, for a long time and have only ever worked professionally in vegan kitchens.
I was offered a part time schedule (you take what you can get, right?) and called in short notice to help out with what was going to be a crazy day. I was told to prep for the other bakers and start on a batter if I “felt comfortable.” I get there, the bakery has sold out from the second shift last night. There are no cupcakes. That’s okay. That’s what I’m there for, people will be in any second. No. I am the only baker, for three hours.
I don’t know if a schedule got messed up, or someone just didn’t show, but I ended up heading a kitchen of three, 30 minutes into my first day. Some of the owners, who are not bakers, and the general manager managed to do my prep to keep us turning out hundreds of cupcakes.
Anyways, they hired me full time.
What a great first day of work story and congrats on the job!
